A Foodie's Guide to Lowertown
August 17, 2020
Lowertown and the ByWard Market are two of Ottawa's oldest neighbourhoods and they also boast some of Ottawa's most unique and delicious restaurants. When you live at 545 Rideau, you'll never be dreading the common question 'what's for dinner?'. Here are just a small sampling of our favourite places to grab a bite to eat in the area!:
ByWard Market Building

Although it is the 4th version of this landmark, the ByWard Market Building has been in the same location since the 1800s. This is an indoor and outdoor market with fruit and vegetable vendors, deli shops, and food stalls. Visit Corazon De Maiz for flavourful tacos, Shafali Bazaar for delicious butter chicken, and Le Moulin De Provence for handmade baked goods.
Moscow Tea Room

The Moscow Tea Room is one of Ottawa's top bars and restaurants. Inspired by the famous Russian Tea Room in New York, this restaurant serves a selection of classic Russian fare. Visit for tea and small plates in the afternoon, and stay for cocktails and their famous pierogies in the evening.
Play Food and Wine

If you're looking for a creative dining experience you can't miss Play Food and Wine. They specialize in a constantly changing menu of small plates, charcuterie, and wines that showcase local ingredients. If it's your first time at Play, ask the server for their best known items!
Sidedoor

Sidedoor is a restaurant you might easily walk past if you don't know just where to look. This creative fusion restaurant is tucked into a courtyard off York Street and offers a menu inspired by Southeast Asian street food. If you visit make sure to sample their famous tacos and their delicious donuts.
I hope you're inspired by this list for your next outing. The city has closed several streets in the ByWard Market to allow for restaurants to expand their patios and provide safe dining options. These closures will be in place until the end of patio season, so now's the time to enjoy your meal outdoors!
